RECONSTRUCTION WORKS ON THE ŠTAJERSKA MOTORWAY

Road infrastructure RECONSTRUCTION WORKS ON THE ŠTAJERSKA MOTORWAY

The Štajerska motorway is among the more heavily trafficked sections of the Slovenian motorway network, mainly due to the increasing volume of freight traffic and daily commuting. The deterioration or damage of pavements and structures, as well as the need for improvements, environmental protection measures, and enhanced road user safety, are the reasons for extensive reconstruction works.

Reconstruction of the Šentilj Viaducts

Reconstruction works on the Šentilj viaducts are underway on the Štajerska motorway between Maribor and the Austrian border.
During the reconstruction, both viaducts (in each direction) will undergo comprehensive renovation. The carriageway areas will be widened, the load-bearing structure of the viaducts will be strengthened, noise barriers will be installed, and measures will be implemented to improve traffic safety and traffic flow.
In 2025, the viaduct in the direction of the Austrian border was reconstructed, while the reconstruction of the viaduct in the direction of Maribor is planned for 2026.

Reconstruction of the Slovenska Bistrica–Fram Section

Two major reconstruction projects are being carried out on the motorway section between Maribor and Celje. On the Fram–Slovenska Bistrica section, six kilometres of carriageway will be reconstructed in both directions. Emergency lanes will be widened to improve traffic safety, a new concrete safety barrier will be installed in the central median, noise barriers will be erected, and the drainage system will be upgraded.
The project also includes the demolition and construction of a new Devina viaduct in the direction of Ljubljana and the reconstruction of the viaduct in the direction of Maribor.
Reconstruction works on the Slovenska Bistrica–Fram section are expected to be completed in 2027.

Reconstruction of the Slovenske Konjice–Dramlje Section

On the Štajerska motorway, the comprehensive reconstruction of the 6.5-kilometre section between Dramlje and Slovenske Konjice, which includes two twin-tube tunnels and several viaducts and bridges, represents the largest current construction project on the Slovenian motorway network.
The project includes the reconstruction of a total of 13 kilometres of motorway carriageway, modernisation of drainage systems and tunnel linings in the Pletovarje and Golo Rebro tunnels, the installation of forced ventilation in all tunnel tubes, the arrangement of emergency escape routes through existing cross passages in the tunnels, replacement of low-voltage equipment and the control and monitoring system, reconstruction of the Škedenj I, Škedenj II and Grapa viaducts, and the installation of new noise barriers at exposed locations.

Widening of the Domžale–Zadobrova Section

The widening of the Štajerska motorway approach to Ljubljana from Domžale to Zadobrova to six lanes is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Throughout the construction period, traffic in both directions will continue to run on two lanes along the 7.3-kilometre section.
The project includes the widening of the existing emergency lane, the reconstruction of the Šentjakob and Sneberje interchanges, the construction of SOS emergency niches, the reconstruction of the pavement and structures, the reconfiguration of the central median, new traffic equipment and drainage systems, the installation of new noise barriers, additional video surveillance, and traffic portals with variable message signs.
The widening of the Štajerska motorway approach will increase traffic capacity and safety, as this is one of the most heavily trafficked sections of the motorway network.

MORE THAN 42,000 VEHICLES TRAVEL DAILY ON THE MOTORWAY SECTION BETWEEN CELJE AND MARIBOR, INCLUDING OVER 6,000 HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES (DATA FROM 2025).
