RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST, WESTERN TUBE OF THE KARAVANKE TUNNEL
The main part of the renovation project of the western tube of the Karavanke Tunnel, built more than 30 years ago, consists of extensive and, above all, technologically very demanding work in the tunnel.
As part of the reconstruction works, repairs and reconstruction of the invert arch will be carried out on specific sections of the tunnel, while a new invert arch will be constructed in areas where it was not installed during the original construction of the western tube. Along the entire length of the tunnel, new filling concrete will be installed, and the lower layers of the pavement structure will be constructed, including central and side drainage systems, concrete curbs, a concrete pavement structure, walkways, drainage channels, and cross passages. Damaged sections of the inner lining and the ceiling slab will also be reconstruted. New electromechanical equipment will be installed, the existing inspection and hydrant niches will be enlarged, and new emergency call niches will be constructed.
The reconstruction also includes the renovation of the existing protected portal building, the widening of the existing motorway, the construction of a small hydropower plant, the reconstruction and/or realignment of the motorway, and the arrangement of the toll station plateau. The construction of a new bridge over the Sava Dolinka River and a new toll station with a larger number of traffic lanes is also planned, which will contribute to increased traffic flow and reduced waiting times.
AFTER THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE WESTERN TUBE IS COMPLETED, ONE-WAY TRAFFIC WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE IN BOTH TUBES OF THE KARAVANKE TUNNEL.
